Defibrillators
- Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs): These are portable and user-friendly devices designed for use by non-medical personnel. They provide voice prompts and instructions to guide users through the process of delivering a shock to a person experiencing sudden cardiac arrest.
- Semi-Automatic Defibrillators: Similar to AEDs but require the user to manually activate the shock button after electrode pad placement.
- Manual Defibrillators: These are typically used by healthcare professionals. They allow the operator to control the timing and intensity of shocks.
- Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillators (ICDs): These are surgically implanted devices under the skin to continuously monitor heart rhythms and deliver shocks if life-threatening arrhythmias occur.
How Defibrillators Work
- Defibrillators deliver an electric shock to the heart to reset its electrical system when it is in a life-threatening arrhythmia, such as ventricular fibrillation.
- The shock temporarily stops the heart's electrical activity, allowing the normal pacemaker cells to regain control and reestablish a regular rhythm.
- Defibrillators are essential in saving the lives of individuals who experience sudden cardiac arrest, which can occur in various settings, including homes, public places, and healthcare facilities.
- Early defibrillation within minutes of a sudden cardiac arrest significantly increases the chances of survival.
